Life is beautiful and living in it is wonderful. No matter how hard or dark it seems, as long as we live and breathe, there is always hope and we can always move forward to reach our dreams. Life is a precious gift from God that we can use to gain more knowledge, wisdom, understanding and insight about the things around us. It also gives us more opportunities to spend time with our family, loved ones, and the people of the world we want to inspire.

Having a long life is not just about being physically healthy and financially capable but it also involves mental and spiritual nurturing. If you want to live longer on Earth, here are some tips and verses from the Bible that will guide you to the fountain of life.

12+ Bible Verses that will Help You Live a Long Life

1. Honor your parents.
“Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.” – Ephesians 6:2-3 (KJV)

Yes, it is written in the Bible that God promised us long life on Earth if we honor and respect our parents. It actually makes sense since our father and mother know what’s best for us. They will do everything to protect and keep us away from harm. So if you want to stay out of danger, listen to your parent’s advice.

2. Keep God’s commandments.
“My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments: For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.” – Proverbs 3:1-2 (KJV)

“Thou shalt keep therefore his statutes, and his commandments, which I command thee this day, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children after thee, and that thou mayest prolong thy days upon the earth, which the Lord thy God giveth thee, for ever.” – Deuteronomy 4:40 (KJV)

God has many commandments in the Bible aside from the 10 commandments that we knew. Two of His greatest laws are to love God with all your heart and to love your neighbors as yourself (see Mark 12:29-31). If our parents know what’s best for us then how much more God? His commandments are instructions to guide us to a good life on Earth. So if you want to live a long life, follow them with all your heart. Isn’t hating your neighbors lead to conflicts in life? Aren’t robbery, adultery, killing and lying make your world more dangerous?

3. Always be fair and just.
“But thou shalt have a perfect and just weight, a perfect and just measure shalt thou have: that thy days may be lengthened in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.” – Deuteronomy 25:15 (KJV)

Unjust and biased people create more enemies. Many hate and curse them and no one might bless or wish them good life. Thus, it is logical to be fair and just if you want to live a longer life.

4. Have wisdom.
“Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her. Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.” – Proverbs 3:13-16 (KJV)

“For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.” – Proverbs 9:11 (KJV)

Wisdom is the ability to discern what’s right from what’s wrong. If you are wise enough, you will surely refrain from making hasty decisions that will bring your life in trouble. Hence, get knowledge and wisdom to live longer on Earth. Choose to eat the right food, do exercise, meditate, and relax. Choose to be happy and healthy, not sickly.

5. Be righteous.
“The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon. Those that be planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. They shall still bring forth fruit in old age; they shall be fat and flourishing;” – Psalm 92:12-14 (KJV)

You can’t choose the wise things then do the wicked things. If you want to live long, don’t just make a choice to live a good lifestyle but STOP doing wickedness, such as drunkenness, gluttony and indolence. Just like the Bible says, righteousness will make a person strong and blooming like a tree, still bearing fruits even at old age.

6. Have understanding.
“Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that hath it: but the instruction of fools is folly. The heart of the wise teacheth his mouth, and addeth learning to his lips. Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.” – Proverbs 16:22-24 (KJV)

You can only achieve understanding by practicing. Even if you choose the right thing or do the right thing, if you don’t keep on doing it, you won’t understand or realize the essence of what you are really doing. With understanding, you also become a good teacher. Your words become pleasant, not only to people who hear them but to you as well. So choose a healthy lifestyle, do it, and keep on doing it. And when you understand what you are doing, teach it so you would inspire other people and they will bless you more life.

7. Do and produce good things.
“Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.” – Matthew 7:19 (ESV)

Well, if you own a fruit tree plantation and you have to choose which to cut down, would you cut the trees that bear good fruit or the ones that bear bad fruit? Therefore, if you like to live long on Earth, do good things and produce good results.

8. Don’t go the easy way.
“For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” – Matthew 7:14 (ESV)

If you want to have a long life, avoid eating instant foods. Instead, eat natural and organic foods though they are more difficult to cook or prepare. Do regular workouts and taste some pain that will help you gain more strength and endurance. Walk if you can instead of riding a car. Be different and extraordinary in a world where the majority are living unhealthy.

9. Worship God.
“Worship the Lord your God, and his blessing will be on your food and water. I will take away sickness from among you, and none will miscarry or be barren in your land. I will give you a full life span.” – Exodus 23:25-26 (NIV)

If you want to receive God’s blessing of a full life span, the verse above is for you. But remember that worshipping God is not only about praying to God. Remember that faith is dead without action (see James 2:14-26). Hence, if you worship God, make sure you love Him with all your heart and obey his commands.

10. Be honest and do not deceive people.
“Whoever would love life and see good days must keep their tongue from evil and their lips from deceitful speech.– 1 Peter 3:10 (NIV)

Well, we know that if you lie and deceive people, you will surely earn their ire. Your life may not only be in danger due to the people who will rage against you but your guilt will also take away your inner peace. Thus, if you want to live a long lifespan on Earth, enjoy your life with the truth. Have peace of mind.

11. Be a God-fearing person.
“The fear of the Lord adds length to life, but the years of the wicked are cut short. – Proverbs 10:27 (NIV)

If you fear the Lord, you will simply depart from evil acts. You will obey His instructions which are for your own good. You will be afraid to commit sins that will imperil your life. You will love your neighbors as you love yourself to avoid wars. You will keep away from adultery, stealing, murder, lying, drunkenness, gluttony, pride, wrath and other practices that may shorten your life.

12. Believe in the Lord.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” – John 3:16 (KJV)

Finally, if you want to live, not only a fully normal life span but an everlasting life, believe in Jesus Christ. Have faith in Him. Work on your faith based on love. Love Him with all your heart, mind, soul and might.

  1. “If you want to have a long life, avoid eating instant foods.” This interpretation kinda gave me pause, and came off, to me, as a bit off topic. lol.

Christ declared all foods are clean for us to eat, stating that it is not food that defiles a man, but it’s the things that come from his heart that are more important.

Also, beautiful article and God bless you! <3

    • Christ never said what you said he said. What the author here said is well said in its entirety. What you said is simply: a poor interpretation of scripture.
