Bible Verses About Anointing Oil (KJV)

There are many biblical references to anointing oil, both in the Old and New Testaments. In the Old Testament, God commands his people to use anointing oil for a variety of purposes, including consecrating priests and kings (Exodus 30:22-25), anointing altars and temple furnishings (Exodus 40:9-11), and sanctifying the Tabernacle (Leviticus 8:10). Anointing oil was also used for healing the sick (James 5:14) and for spiritual warfare (Psalm 23:5; Isaiah 10:27).

In the New Testament, we see that Jesus was anointed with oil by Mary Magdalene at Bethany (John 12:3). And, in the book of Revelation, we read about the “anointed ones” who will reign with Christ for a thousand years (Revelation 20:4, 6).

The anointing oil mentioned in the Bible was most likely a blend of olive oil and spices. The Hebrew word for anointing oil, shemen, comes from a root word meaning “fat” or “oil.” The Greek word for anointing oil, aleipho, also means “to rub with oil.”

Though we don’t use anointing oil today in the same way as they did in biblical times, we can still apply the principles behind the use of anointing oil to our lives. Just as the oil was used to set apart something or someone for a specific purpose, we can ask God to set us apart for His purposes. We can also use the act of anointing as a symbol of our dedication to Christ and our willingness to be used by Him.

Here are some Bible verses about anointing oil:

“And you shall take the anointing oil, and anoint the tabernacle and all that is in it; and you shall consecrate it and all its furnishings, and it shall be holy. You shall also anoint the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and consecrate the altar, so that it may be most holy. You shall also anoint the basin and its stand, and consecrate them.” – Exodus 40:9-11

“And Moses took the anointing oil, and anointed the tabernacle and all that was in it, and sanctified them. He also sprinkled some of it on the altar seven times, and anointed the altar and all its utensils, and the basin and its stand, to consecrate them. And he poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed him, to consecrate him.” – Leviticus 8:10-12

“Then you shall take some of the blood that is on the altar, and some of the anointing oil, and sprinkle it on Aaron and on his garments, and on his sons and on their garments with him; and he and his garments shall be holy, and his sons’ and his sons’ garments with him.” – Exodus 29:21

“And you shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may serve me as priests.” – Exodus 30:30
