What is the purpose of life on Earth? What does the Bible say about our whole duty in this world? Below, I have shared answers backed up by the verses in the Bible.

So what is the purpose of life according to the Holy Scriptures?

The purpose of life on Earth is to fear God and keep His commandments.

“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.” – Ecclesiastes 12:13 KJV

But why do we need to fear God and keep His commandments?

It is because the fear of the Lord is wisdom and to keep His commandments is understanding.

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.” – Psalm 111:10 KJV

And why do we need to have wisdom and understanding?

It’s because wisdom gives us a straight path to eternal life while understanding gives us the knowledge of God and keeps us away from the evil which leads to eternal punishment.

“It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. – 1 Corinthians 1:30 (NIV)

And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding. – Job 28:28 (KJV)

“Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or turn away from them. Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.” – Proverbs 4:5-19 (NIV)

“And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life.” – 1 John 5:20 (ESV)

But why should we care about all these things: the fear of the Lord, wisdom, understanding, evil, death, salvation and eternal life?

It’s because God will judge us on the day of Judgment.

“For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.” – Ecclesiastes 12:14 (KJV)

So how can we have confidence on the day of the Judgment?

If we accept the love of God and keep on living in His love, we will have confidence on the Day of Judgment.

So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. – 1 John 4:16-17 (ESV)

I hope this short article has helped you achieve some enlightenment about the purpose and meaning of our lives.
