The adolescent years are the most crucial in the life of a teenager. It is during this period when your hormones are raging and your curiosity is at its peak.

Contrary to the notion that most teens only cause headaches to those around them, there are still adolescents who are able to make their parents proud. They may not be perfect, and they also do silly things at times, but they can still be responsible.

If you want to be a more responsible teenager, you can start by doing these proven ways:

1. Establish a study habit.

At this stage, your top responsibility is your studies. You are expected to take school seriously so you can graduate with a degree and have better opportunities in the future. For this reason, it is greatly advised for every student to have a regular study habit. It will help maximize learning and achieve good grades in your classes.

2. Submit all school requirements on time.

Aside from establishing a study habit, see to it that you can always finish your projects and homework on time. Avoid cramming by overcoming procrastination. Start working on your school requirements as soon as you receive the instructions. Do not wait for the week or day before the deadline before you begin doing them.

3. Avoid being a tardy student.

In addition to being a responsible student, it is important that you regularly attend your classes. Having perfect attendance will ensure that you do not miss any lesson or activity. Also, make it a habit to go to school early. It is not cool to be a habitual latecomer, nor does it show being a responsible teen.

4. Clean your room regularly.

Your room is your first training ground to develop a sense of responsibility. Do not wait for your mom to tidy up your bedroom, change beddings, and empty your trash bin. Instead, make it a habit to make your bed as soon as you wake up. Moreover, set a regular schedule for cleaning your room. It can be every day, twice a week, or just every weekend.

5. Help do household chores without being told.

Another way to help you be more responsible is by helping around the house without being told. Take the initiative to do the usual chores. For example, you can volunteer to cook breakfast or wash the dishes after dinner. Doing this will not only help you discipline yourself to be more responsible, but it can also lessen the burdens that your parents have to attend to.

6. Wash your own laundry.

You can say that you are a responsible teenager if you can do your own laundry regularly. Be responsible for your own things and needs. Since it is you who wear your wardrobe, take full responsibility for it. Do not wait for mom to put your dirty clothes into the washing machine.

7. Keep your stuff organized.

Aside from doing your laundry, be responsible for all your other things. Avoid placing them everywhere as they can only cause mess and you might only lose them. Make it a habit to put back your stuff to its original place right after using. You can also provide an organizer for your tiny things, like pens and clips, so you do not lose them. If you are creative and have enough time, you can work on DIY organizers.

8. Set an alarm clock to wake up early.

Waking up early has a lot of advantages. First of all, it will help you avoid being late for school. Also, you can do more things around the house or prepare yourself without cramming. If your problem is how to wake up early, buy an alarm clock or set your phone’s alarm every morning. Of course, it will only be effective if you avoid getting back to sleep after turning off the alarm.

9. Choose your friends wisely.

Many teenagers develop irresponsible habits due to the influence of their peers. According to the Bible verse, 1 Corinthians 15:33, “Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character.’” For this reason, choose the kind of friends you go out with. If you want to be responsible, then you have to stick with responsible people too. These are the friends who will influence you positively.

10. Avoid vices.

The main reason why you must stay away from bad friends is to avoid their negative influence. If your friends are experimenting with drugs and alcohol, you must not join them. If your friends invite you to try smoking or encourage you to start gambling, please say a big “NO.” The thrill of doing something nasty could be so enticing, but you have to think about how it could affect you in the long run.

11. Do not lie to your parents.

Having open communication with your parents will help you develop a more responsible outlook in life. Therefore, avoid keeping secrets from them. Also, never ever lie to them just to get what you want or have excuses or alibis for your misconduct. For instance, do not ask permission to go out with your friends for a group study when you would be having a drinking spree. Be honest with your parents, and understand that their “no” has a good reason behind it.

12. Listen to your parents’ advice.

Know that your parents have wisdom and knowledge that you still have to learn. For this reason, listen to their advice and heed their rules and instructions as long as you are living under their roof. Your parents only want what is best for you, so everything they do and tell you is for your own good.

13. Watch what you eat.

Overall, your self is your first responsibility. That is why you need to take good care of yourself. The first step to do this is to make sure that you eat healthily. Avoid unhealthy snacks, such as junk foods, since they can make you sick. Instead, eat more vegetables and fruits and drink a lot of water rather than soda.

14. Take care of your personal hygiene.

Like the aforementioned tip, your primary responsibility is taking care of yourself. For this reason, you need to be mindful of your hygiene as well. Make sure that you always clean your body every day. It is not only to keep you presentable but also to avoid diseases.

15. Study God’s Word.

The Bible is a spiritual book full of wisdom on how to live as an upright person in general. If you want to grow up into a responsible adult, reading and applying the Scripture into your life will help you a lot. This book teaches discipline, accountability, and integrity among other reputable character traits.

16. Develop a daily devotion habit.

How can you maximize learning about God’s Word? You can do it by having a daily Quiet Time or daily devotion. It is your regular time to talk to God through prayer and know His will by meditating His Word. Establishing such a habit is your first step to developing self-discipline, which is essential in becoming a responsible person.

17. Be mentored in a small group.

Having a teachable heart and learning from others can also help you grow up as a responsible individual. You can join a small group, also called a life group, at church. This group is not only focused on Bible study. It is designed to be holistically involved in the life of each member to help everyone overcome their struggles and be a better person.
