Being a pessimist can greatly affect how you respond to situations as it may lead you to despair or depression. Moreover, it can have a negative effect on how you socialize with people. It could cause trust issues and cynicism.

In order for you to improve your mindset towards circumstances and the people around you, you have to discipline yourself to be a better thinker. You can follow these 20 smart ways to do that.

1. Be optimistic at all times.
Choose to think positively all the time. Whatever the situation is, always believe that something good will come out of it—of course, with the right actions on your part. This will help you avoid being stressed-up.

2. Control your mind from overthinking.
Overthinking is the product of too much worrying, and it can eventually lead to anxiety and depression. The best way to stop yourself from overthinking is by keeping your mind busy with productive things. Whenever you are tempted to overthink, immediately divert your attention to something else.

3. Focus your mind on what you do now.
To help you achieve excellence in everything you do, train your mind to always concentrate on what you are doing at the moment. If you are studying, then control your thoughts from thinking about what to eat this lunch.

4. Read, read, and read.
Reading will help you gain more insights. The ideas you learn will be added to your stock knowledge. You can retrieve them whenever needed, especially when you have to make crucial judgments and practical solutions.

5. Weigh first the possible consequences of a decision.
Wise decision-making involves sound judgment of the possible results of your options. You may not be able to predict the exact outcome of each decision, but thinking ahead will give you a vision of what could happen if you choose a particular path.

6. Look ahead.
Be a visionary of what you want to accomplish in a certain period. Having specific goals and planning how to achieve them will help your mind focus on what is productive and necessary.

7. Mine the gold of good intentions.
Avoid being suspicious towards everyone as this will lead to trust issues. Instead, always choose to see the good in others. Unless you have proven that they are guilty of doing something wrong, give them the benefit of the doubt.

8. Learn the art of emptying the mind.
There are times when you need to clear your mind from everything, especially when you are about to be overcome by stress or anxiety. This is not easy to do, but practicing meditation will help you achieve this state of decluttering the thoughts. This will help you relax.

9. Exercise regularly.
Regular exercise can help your blood circulate well and bring enough oxygen to all parts of your body, including your brain. This results in better cognitive functions—meaning your mind will be in a better state of creating sound judgments.

10. Play mind games.
Playing chess, rubrics cube, mobile mind game apps, and other brain-challenging activities will not only keep your mind sharp even as you age, but they can also help prevent cognitive diseases, such as Alzheimer’s. These games can help you to develop strategic and critical thinking skills as well.

11. Get enough sleep.
Surely, you know how it is like when you have to go to school or work and you were not able to get enough sleep the night before. Lack of sleep makes you irritable and absent-minded because your body and brain have run out of energy, so they demand rest. This will result in poor judgment.

12. Choose to be grateful.
Looking at the bright side of life will keep you from being easily discouraged by negative circumstances. Instead of focusing on problems, decide to be grateful for the good things or blessings you have received.

13. Hang out with mature people.
If you want to be wiser, then surround yourself with people you consider wise. Choose to hang out with friends you know are mature for their age—those who do not make reckless decisions and whose judgments you trust.

14. Treat every problem as an opportunity to grow.
If you think of problems as hindrances to your happiness and success, then they could easily discourage you. However, if you think of them as opportunities to exercise your faith, enhance your problem-solving skills, and grow in wisdom, patience, and endurance, then you will be positive in facing them.

15. Be grateful for past failures and bad experiences.
You may not see it yet, but someday you will be thankful that you have gone through your past—no matter how painful or disappointing it was. Once you have healed, you will realize that you became a stronger person because of those experiences which taught you valuable lessons.

16. Stop recalling the past.
Not letting go of the past will keep you from moving on. The bitterness will not go away, and it will continue to affect your thoughts. Instead of being able to focus on how you can be productive, your mind would be lingering around your ‘what if’s’ and ‘if only’s’.

17. Filter what you hear.
Do not accept everything that you hear from other people or you would be constantly thinking of what others say about you. Whether they are opinions or criticisms, evaluate which ones are constructive, true, and beneficial.

18. Do not be too critical.
Critical people always see the negative in everything and every one—so only a few people want to be around them. Being too critical will make you trust people less at work and even in relationships because you would have this notion that no one can do things right as you do.

19. Be content with what you currently have.
Yes, you need to constantly aim for higher goals and strive to achieve greater things. However, while you are to reach there yet, be grateful for what you currently have. Cherish the little achievements and use them as a motivation to keep moving up.

20. Believe in the power of prayer.
You may not be in control of the things around you but trust that there is someone up there who is. If you believe that God listens to prayers and He has the power to make things work together for your good (Romans 8:28), then let go of your fears and be hopeful instead. Just like meditation, praying has the power to cleanse your mind from anxiety and give you peace.

The Power of Thinking
