What Hypocrisy Means?

Hypocrisy is defined as the act of pretending to have beliefs, feelings, or standards that one does not actually have. In other words, it’s all about putting on a false front in order to deceive others.

The word “hypocrite” comes from the Greek word hypokrites, which literally means “actor.” This makes sense when you think about it, since someone who is being hypocritical is essentially just putting on a show. And just like with any good actor, the goal is to make the audience believe that they are something that they’re really not.

Interestingly enough, hypocrisy isn’t always intentional. There are times when people can be hypocrites without even realizing it. For example, let’s say that you tell your friend not to smoke cigarettes because they’re bad for their health. But then, later on, you go out and smoke a cigarette yourself. In this case, you’re being a hypocrite without even knowing it!

Of course, intentional hypocrisy is much more common than unintentional hypocrisy. People often pretend to have certain beliefs or standards in order to make themselves look good. For example, a politician might publicly denounce corruption while secretly taking bribes. Or someone might preach about the importance of being faithful in a relationship while secretly cheating on their partner.

What Does The Bible Say About Hypocrisy?

The Bible has a lot to say about hypocrisy. In Matthew 6:2, Jesus says, “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others.”

Jesus also warns against hypocrisy in Luke 12:1, saying, “Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.”

And in Matthew 23:28, Jesus says, “In the same way, on the outside you appear to people as righteous but on the inside you are full of hypocrisy and wickedness.”

These verses make it clear that Jesus did not approve of hypocrisy. He saw it as something that was dishonest and destructive.

So why is hypocrisy such a bad thing? Well, for one thing, it’s simply not honest. When someone pretends to be something they’re not, they’re being deceitful. And as we all know, honesty is always the best policy.

But hypocrisy can also be harmful to relationships. When someone is hypocritical, they’re not being genuine. They’re putting on a show instead of being real. And this can make it difficult to trust or connect with that person.

So if you want to live a life of integrity, it’s important to avoid hypocrisy. Be honest with yourself and with others, and don’t pretend to be something you’re not.
