Have you surrendered your life to Christ? If yes, part of that commitment is to nurture your relationship with Him daily. As you actively seek God’s will and make an effort to live by it, you become more Christlike.

However, you cannot expect the Christian walk to be easy. Aside from persecutions, temptations, and other challenges to your faith, there will be times when you will lose focus and passion.

If currently, you are afraid that you are drifting away from God, no need to panic. Consider it as a challenge for you to draw closer to Him, increase your faith, and discipline yourself to stick to your commitment.

So, how can you confirm that you are really drifting away from God? You can check out the following signs.

1. You Do Not Pray Anymore.

One of the signs that your passion for the Lord is turning cold is your laziness to pray. Passionate Christians value prayer and intercession so much because it is their way of talking to God. It is also their way of expressing their adoration and gratitude to Him. So, if you do not feel like talking to Him anymore, it is an alarming sign indeed.

2. You Feel Lazy to Read the Bible.

It is the same way as studying God’s Word. If you are not interested in reading and meditating on the Bible anymore, it means you are slacking off from your commitment. The Scripture is your spiritual food, so it is necessary for your spirit to be healthy.

1 Peter 2:2 says, “like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation,”

3. You Lose Interest in Attending Church Activities.

Another sign that you are drifting away from God is your lost interest in participating in spiritual activities. Instead, you rather go to the mall, date with your friends, or just stay in the house and sleep. If you are experiencing this now, it is a red flag you must address soon.

4. You Become Content with Being a Church Attendee.

Or probably you still want to go to church, but you content yourself with attending worship service every Sunday. A Christian who is in love with God will have the burning desire to serve Him by actively contributing to the church.

5. You Have Many Excuses Not to Attend Fellowships or Bible Study.

Have you recently been giving yourself excuses of why you should not attend your life group or other fellowship activities at church? Is it because you are busy at work or school? What is really the reason why you cannot make time for these activities anymore?

6. You Think of Christian Books and Videos as Boring.

In the same way, if you have lost interest in spiritual materials in general, it means you are drifting away from God. For instance, you may find Christian books, videos, or even podcasts to be boring and a waste of time. However, if you still value your relationship with the Lord, you will be hungry for more of God in your life. Therefore, you will grab every opportunity to hear or read His Word.

7. You Do Not Feel Guilty When Committing Sins.

Another alarming sign that you have been distant from God lately is your tolerance of sin. Christians are not immune to sin, but mature ones are eager to resist them. If you have not been resisting sins recently, and you do not feel sorry for them, you are on the wrong track.

8. You Are Not Affected by the Gospel and God’s Grace as Before.

Do you know the worth of your salvation? Christ Jesus had to die on the cross on behalf of anyone who would believe in Him. If you have put your trust in Christ to be your Savior, you know that being a Christian is not something to be taken for granted. It cost the Lord His blood, flesh, and life. Now, if you cannot grasp the seriousness of His sacrifice, then you have to ask if you are really saved at all.

1 Corinthians 1:18, “For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.”

9. You Make Plans for Yourself without Consulting God’s Will.

Christians who have committed their lives to the Lord understand that they should consider His will in everything. For instance, before deciding to pursue a career, they have to pray if it can bring glory to God. Or before entering a relationship, they need to ask the Lord if the potential partner is the right one for them. Now, if you have been planning things lately without praying about them, it is a sign.

10. You Have No Desire to Participate in the Ministry Anymore.

Have you been so passionate about using your talents, time, and resources for God’s glory before? How about now? If you have no interest in helping the ministry anymore, it may reflect your passion for God. Probably, God is no longer your top priority, so you put a little value on serving Him now.

11. You Have Other Priorities before God.

In connection to no. 10, you would know that you are drifting away from God if He is not your priority anymore. For instance, you can be so busy with your job now that you can no longer make time for prayer and Bible reading anymore. Or maybe you are in a new relationship and so in love that you cannot spare an hour or two to go to church on Sundays because you are on a date.

12. You Feel No Conviction to Share the Gospel.

As mentioned in no. 8, if you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior, it is clear to you how important sharing the gospel with others is. The grace and gift of salvation you have received from God will compel you to share this good news with those who need to hear it. Now, if you feel no urge to share it with others anymore, it means you do not see its worth anymore.

13. You Conform to Worldly Standards.

You are surely drifting away from God if you choose to adopt worldly ways rather than godly ways. But, on the other hand, if you love God, you will avoid what He dislikes and do what pleases Him. It may not be easy to do, but at least you will try your best.

Romans 12:2 says, Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

14. You Doubt God’s Existence.

Are you recently doubting if God truly exists? If you face this kind of dilemma, it does not automatically mean that you are losing faith and love for God. However, if you keep entertaining such thoughts and start to believe that God is only a myth, it is already a different story.

15. You Do Not Think about God Throughout the Day.

Can a day pass by without you remembering God at all? If yes, then it is clear that your relationship with Him needs to be rekindled. Just like how it is impossible not to think about the person you love constantly, it is absurd for a Christian to forget about the Lord.

Go Back to Your First Love

If you are confident that you have been drifting away from God recently, do not be discouraged. It is not too late to draw near to Him. He is patient and gracious and would surely welcome you back, just like the father in the story of the prodigal son.
