Productivity Tip #7: Maintain A Positive Attitude

When I was younger, I worked at a hospital as a housekeeper. I hated it along with 95% of the other housekeepers. Housekeepers were the least respected. We weren’t as important as the doctors, nurses, aides, porters, or other staff. We were the people with the mop. Because my attitude towards my job was so negative, so was my productivity. I was more inclined to hide out than work, just like most of the housekeeping staff. But, there were some housekeepers who had a positive attitude about their work and themselves, and they were the workers that kept the hospital running clean and sanitary.

Looking back, housekeeping was/is an important job. One woman who had a very positive attitude about her job was quite aware of that. She told me that her job was to not only make her unit pleasant (clean and tidy) for the people staying there, but it was to uplift the patient’s spirits since she was the one they interacted with the most. She loved her job, and she was very productive. She probably did more in one day than most of us did in a month.

8 Reasons A Positive Attitude Makes You More Productive

1. It Gives You Energy

When you are feeling negative, your energy drains out of your body and you just want to sit around and do nothing. It’s the exact opposite for feeling positive. You want to get up and do things, and you have the energy to do so.

My energy is always highest on vacation when I’m feeling my upbeat about life. I can stay up late, check things off my to-see and to-do list easily, and still wake up early to get started on a new travel day. My positive attitude helps me stay energetic and ready for anything.

2. It Gives You The Desire To Do What Needs To Be Done

A negative attitude towards life results in a negative attitude towards what you need to do. And you spend a ton of time complaining and avoiding. Why bother being productive when things are all going to shit anyways?

A positive attitude gives you the desire to be productive and create or maintain the life you want. Finishing this will help me get more of what I love!

The fact is, while the reward is a big factor in getting things done, a positive attitude is the biggest motivator to be productive.

Economists carried out a number of experiments to test the idea that happy employees work harder. In the laboratory, they found happiness made people around 12% more productive. – WarWick

3. It Relieves Stress

A positive attitude helps you to reduce stress from worry and anxiety. When that happens, you are better able to focus on what you are doing and be more productive.

Too much stress and it becomes hard to do anything productive. How many people do you know that end up taking stress leaves from work? They simply cannot be productive at work (or do anything at work) because they are too stressed out!

I know firsthand how a negative attitude can cause you to lose productivity.

I am a freelance writer, and I had a steady client for years who made up the bulk of my income. One day he stopped requesting articles from and seemed to disappear, and my attitude shifted from ‘things are great!’ to ‘what the hell is wrong with me!’ I lost almost all my income in a moment, and I was pissed off that I had put all my eggs in one basket. My resulting negative attitude towards everything from writing to my abilities to get back on track left me very stressed out and very unproductive. I was a ball of tension, and I wasn’t able to focus on anything but my anger, hurt, and fear. I wasn’t able to start being productive in my work or home life until I was able to see things in a more positive light and reduce my stress.

4. It Makes You More Creative

A positive attitude helps you keep an open mind and see situations from an angle not skewed with fear or anger.

It also helps you to be more welcome to change and even embrace it. That helps you be more creative when it comes to problem-solving, innovation, and overcoming issues that, if not overcome, could potentially affect your productivity.

A positive attitude helps you focus on more than just the problem, which is where a negative mindset tends to go. When you can focus on more than just the problem, you can find creative solutions easier and increase productivity.

5. It Helps You Stay In The Game

I know one person who is very negative towards romantic relationships. She thinks that they are all doomed to fail and be stressful while they last.

It’s no wonder that she isn’t very productive in her relationships. She doesn’t have the desire to stay committed to her relationships and do the work necessary to grow and nurture them.

This is the same in every area of life. If you view something negatively, you are not going to want to stay in the game.

But, if you view something positively, then you will want to do the work required and stay committed for the long haul.

6. It Boosts Your Confidence

When you feel good about yourself and life, your confidence soars. And when that happens, productivity increases in every area of your life.

When you know you are great, you want to do great things.

Moreover, your confidence helps you forgive yourself when mistakes are made and avoid blaming yourself for things that are not your fault – both of which will make you more productive.

7. It Makes You More Likeable

Sometimes we need other people to help us be productive – and not just at work, but in all areas of our lives. That’s when a positive attitude can really help. Being positive makes you more likable.

I personally do not like spending too much time around negative people. It’s hard to create and maintain a close relationship with people like that.

However, positive people have always attracted my support when they need it. I’m more willing to work with them and help them get things they want to get.

8. It Gives You Hope And Faith

When we expect great things in our lives and have the faith that we will get them, we become much more willing to do what we need to do to get them. I mean, what’s the point of being productive in anything if you don’t think it’s going to work out well?

A positive attitude gives you hope and faith.

A negative attitude gives you pessimism and mistrust.

Best Way To Maintain A Positive Attitude?

It all boils down to the way you talk to yourself. This is why I’m such a hardcore believer in positive affirmations. The fact is you are affirming stuff to yourself on a moment-to-moment basis, so why not affirm positive things?

If you can’t think of anything positive to affirm to yourself, look for something. Do your research on the topic, work on your personal development, and increase your awareness. Yes, this takes work, but it’s worth it when it comes to developing a positive attitude and increasing your productivity.
