10 Ways to Build and Maintain Trust in a Relationship

build trust in a relationship

Trust is one of the most important elements in a relationship and if you’re expecting any type of romantic commitment to last, you have to rely on its power to connect and bring two people together come what may.

Couples in a long term relationship have either mastered the art of Trust or are now slowly struggling to maintain it. This is because, just like love and respect, trust has to be earned over and over and should be able to withstand any storm that comes it’s way.

Regardless of where you are in this spectrum, this article will help you find ways to build and maintain trust in your relationship.

Here are the things that you should remember:

1. First, trust in your own worth.
You have to overcome your worst insecurities if you want to be a person capable of trusting others. You have to believe that you’re good enough for the person you love, that you’re worth their time and attention because this is where you develop the confidence to trust in their commitment.

In other words, the first step that you have to take is to trust yourself and to believe in your own worth.

2. Have faith in your partner’s love for you.
Secondly, you have to believe that you’re worthy to be loved. Have faith in your partner’s love for you because this is where genuine trust resides. If you believe in them and how they feel about you, there will be no room for doubts and uncertainties, no room for suspicions and fear.

Building trust in your relationship involves creating a strong and genuine love for each other.

3. Value honesty and take time to listen.
Communicate often and do your part to be involved in the conversation by being an honest speaker and a good listener. By creating this refuge of honesty and openness, you can both express your inner feelings without hesitation and fear of being judged.

Most of the strongest relationships are built on the foundations of honesty and truth, so make sure you’re doing it right.

4. Talk about the things that matter.
Don’t hesitate to point out issues and problems that can potentially ruin your relationship. It’s okay to be critical of your partner and how they do their part, but you should not also turn a blind eye to your own shortcomings.

Maintain and build trust in your relationship by having the courage to talk about the things that matter and to not be afraid to admit if mistakes are made.

5. Be strong enough not to give in to temptations.
You have to find the strength to reject and overcome temptations. Remember that these temporary pleasures won’t solve anything. Instead, the consequences of your actions will eventually find their way to your relationship.

Your partner may forgive you but don’t expect them to give you the same trust that they once had before you broke their heart. They don’t deserve your lies and they certainly do not deserve the heartaches that come with them.

6. Resolve relationship issues together.
Trust in your relationship and in both of your ability to solve the problems together. You don’t have to let other people decide for the both of you and never let them tell you what to do.

Having the power to fix whatever is broken is a sign that you can be trusted to be your partner’s strength and refuge especially during the darkest times in your relationship.

7. Don’t be scared to ask questions.
The only way to develop and maintain trust is by allowing truth and honesty to prevail at all times – and the only way to let them in your relationship is by asking the right questions without being scared of and judged for it.

Ask them about the things that have been bothering you for a while; ask your partner about an incident that made you feel doubtful of their love for you. You deserve to know the answer. Go ahead, and be brave.

8. Be brave enough to hear the truth.
In relation to the previous section, it’s also important that you are brave enough to hear the answers. Truth hurts most of the time but it can also set you free.

Your partner may give you answers that will make you question your love for them, and some answers can even reveal a lot about their feelings for you. Hearing the truth is so much better than suffering in silence from not knowing what’s really going on.

9. Never lie – no matter how much the truth hurts.
If you want someone to trust you, never lie to them – not even because you want to save them from getting hurt. It’s an absolute rule if you want to be genuinely happy in your relationship.

A love story built on lies will never last – and many people have learned this lesson the hard way, so no matter how hurtful and heartbreaking the truth can be, you have to do and say it out loud.

10. Develop a connection beyond romance.
Lastly, you have to learn to trust your significant other not just as a partner in a relationship, not just a lover in a romantic bond, but as a friend whom you can share the deepest parts of you.

You have to develop and maintain trust as friends and as two people who genuinely want the best for each other.

Trust is one of the things that cannot easily be gained. One has to earn it and you have to keep working on it every day of your life. It may sound exhausting to constantly sustain this important element in your relationship but it’s actually not that hard, as long as you value truth as much as you value love.

However, remember that happiness in a relationship does not only depend on the amount of love that you give but it also relies on important values such as trust, respect and commitment – and everything is equally important – so make sure you don’t take any of them for granted.

  1. If you know whats natural, you mastered the relationship. being honest & caring is key. Love potion is always passion & perseverance. good luck & never stop learning. be kind & wisdom. Smile & always say thank you is legitimately a sign of appreciation.

  2. I wish I knew. I think it comes down to communication. When those little pings of jealousy seep in or something triggers that jealousy, communicate that with your partner. Be completely honest. For example: “I’m not totally sure why, but I don’t feel right about something that I just saw and I need your clarity to help me feel better”. Or maybe say “I’m having a really tough time letting go of what happened. I know we’ve talked about it, but I think talking more might help me feel better”.

I struggle with this too. It’s hard to look vulnerable to your partner but I feel that it is essential for building trust.

    Good luck.
